Biography

I am currently on leave from the University of California, San Diego, as Mitau Distinguished Professor of Political Science at Macalester College, and Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota

Organizations & Institutions

Macalester College -- H. N. (Harry) Hirsch joined the Macalester faculty in 2001 as Mitau Professor of Political Science. He attended the University of Michigan and received his advanced training at Princeton. Before coming to Macalester, he taught for eight years at Harvard and fourteen years at the University of California, San Diego, where he also served as department chair. His reseach and teaching interests include civil liberties and gay and lesbian politics. He has published various articles as well as two books, The Enigma of Felix Frankfurter and A Theory of Liberty: The Constitution and Minorities. He is currently working on a large-scale empirical study of attitudes toward politics and law among members of sexual minority groups in several American cities, including the Twin Cities. He teaches Foundations of American Politics, American Political Thought, Civil Liberties, and Gender, Sexuality, and the Law, among other courses.
