Readings
on the Rhetoric of Social Protest by Charles E.
Morris(Editor), Stephen H. Browne(Editor)
This volume includes thirty of the most
significant essays from the literature on social protest rhetoric.
From Leland Griffin's groundbreaking work, "The Rhetoric of
Historical Movements," to very recent case studies of
specific movements, the selections show the evolution of a dynamic
scholarship—its theoretical foundations, the debates that shape
further inquiry, the critical studies that illustrate key
theoretical positions. Substantive introductions to the three
sections highlight key points, vital connections, and recurring
conflicts. A selected bibliography helps students launch their own
research on social movements.
From the Preface:
This volume is designed for instructors and
students in courses that study social protest from a rhetorical
perspective. On the basis of our own classroom experiences and our
conversations with colleagues who had similar teaching goals, we
agreed that we wanted a book that would offer ready access to a
rich but dispersed literature on the subject in a single volume;
highlight key theoretical, historical, and critical essays and
developments; and provide a basis upon which students could extend
their own explorations and insights. Our selections and commentary
have been guided by a wish to see some of the best work in the
discipline brought together in a cogent, clear, and productive
format. We believe that both instructor and student will find in
these pages a wide range of provocative issues, intriguing
personalities, and suggestive lines of scholarly inquiry...
