Eminent Maricones : Arenas, Lorca, Puig, and Me (Living Out, Gay and Lesbian Autobiographies)

Besame Mucho : New Gay Latino Fiction (New Gay Latino Fiction)Besame Mucho : New Gay Latino Fiction (New Gay Latino Fiction) by Jaime Manrique (Editor), Jesse Dorris (Editor)

Writer Manrique (see also the review of Eminent Maricones on in this issue) gathers, with coeditor Jesse Dorris, an eye-opening selection of exemplary stories by contemporary gay Latino men. These stories are edgy, confrontational, and nonapologetic. They are in-your-face when it comes to gay sexuality and face slapping in terms of the talent they showcase. In "Seoritas in Love," by Manrique himself, the narrator and his friend go to the NYU campus to hear an address by Ram--n Ariza, an openly gay Latin American writer; and the narrator and the famous writer establish a connection, despite the latter's positive HIV status. "The Two Miracles of the Gringos' Virgin," by James Ca--n, is a tease: the main character was born a hermaphrodite, and the story is outlandish. And Emmanuel Xavier takes no prisoners with his muscular story "Banjee Hustlers," about the New York drug and bar scene. Good for rounding out a library's comprehensive short story shelves.

AIDS in Cuba

Essay by Karen Wald

Excerpt:

If anything gave a boost to greater acceptance of homosexuality in Cuba, it was the caring and respectful treatment which gay men with AIDS have received in the AIDS sanatoriums after their own behavior taught the less-conscious health workers and staff there (many of whom were knowingly coming in direct daily contact with gay men for the first time) that judgments based on sexual preference were simply inaccurate...

Sin Fronteras

Sin Fronteras (Without Borders): A bilingual radio program with Music (English, Spanish, World Beat), News, Commentary, lnterviews, Gossip y pues--todo de mas!

Sin Fronteras first came on the air Sunday, July 4th, 1993 from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. on 55,000 watt non-commercial "Community" radio station KNON 89.3 FM, Dallas, Texas. But due to popular demand, Sin Fronteras went to two hours (10:00 p.m. - Midnight), and a better time slot, to serve the diverse Latino community. Because of Sin Fronteras' diversity, it crosses over various segments of the community besides Spanish speakers and Latinos. Sin Fronteras is also the voice of under served and under represented Gay & Lesbian Latino Community. Sin Fronteras was, and is, the first of its kind radio program serving the Dallas - Forth Worth Latino market area. It is the varied voice of the air-waves, living up to its name, Sin Fronteras (Without Borders)--inclusive, not exclusive, and too with a world beat music sound.

Sin Fronteras programs consist of music, mixed with interviews of artists (visual, poets, writers, musicians), civic leaders and politicians. Interviews too are with representatives of local and national Gay organizations in the USA and México. Programs have consisted on such topics: Proposition 187, EEO, voting, health, immigrate bashing, same sex marriage and more. With some shows originating live, via cellular telephone, from various locations in México D.F.
