Queer
Dog : Homo/Pup/Poetry
by Gerry
Gomez Pearlberg (Editor)
Queer Dog is a
collection of poems by lesbians and gay men about their dogs. Even
cat-lovers will love the humor, goofiness, and sentimentality of
these tributes to surrogate children. The authors range from
Gertrude Stein, who makes the 20th century's great statement of
identity, "I am I because my little dog knows me"; to
Eileen Myles, who soberly considers an important book of her life,
"Skuppy the Sailor Dog"; to Kitty Tsui, who envisions
finding a lost (human) mother in "a dog's poem." A
terrifically fun book for any queer with a canine companion.
With dogs looming large in America's
"collective conscious, " according to a recent New
Yorker article, Queer Dog presents a collection of canine poetry
in a range of styles by such famous and infamous gay and lesbian
poets as Gertrude Stein, Jack Anderson, Jeffery Conway, May Sarton,
Eileen Myles, and Jan Freeman.
"Queer Dog won a 1998 Firecracker
Alternative Book Award for Poetry at the American Book Expo in
Chicago in early June '98. The award is given for excellence in
the small press or "alternative" publishing world. Queer
Dog was also a 1997 Lambda Book Award Finalist. The book is being
featured in a two-page spread in the Village Voice's Gay Pride
Issue which hits the stands on June 23rd, 1998." -- Gerry
Gomez Pearlberg , June 22, 1998 Queer Dog wins the Firecracker
Alternative Book Award!
