Ruth Bernhard : The Eternal Body : A Collection of Fifty NudesRuth Bernhard : The Eternal Body : A Collection of Fifty Nudes by Ruth Bernhard, Margaretta Mitchell

For over half a century, acclaimed photographer Ruth Bernhard has worked to "simplify, isolate, and give emphasis to form with greatest clarity" in her radiant photographs of the female nude. Now, with Chronicle Books' timely reissue of her best-selling volume, The Eternal Body, Bernhard's most evocative images are once again available in a superb collection, complete with an insightful text, that pays tribute to a living legend. Hauntingly sensual yet classically reserved, the book's ethereal duotone photographs appear to be illuminated from within so that even the simplest lines of the human form -- a draped torso, a curved neck, an angled limb -- take on a complexity not often seen in work of this kind. A master artist whose technical prowess places her among the ranks of the greatest photographers of our time, Ruth Bernhard has created a masterpiece of expression and sensitivity in The Eternal Body.

Ruth Bernhard - Between Art and Life by Ruth Bernhard, Margaretta K. Mitchell

Hailed by Ansel Adams as "the greatest photographer of the nude," Ruth Bernhard is an icon in the photographic world. As told by Ruth in countless conversations with close friend and biographer Margaretta Mitchell, this thoughtful, illustrated memoir is a true tribute to the legendary artist. Reminiscent of a personal scrapbook, the engaging text is adorned with an abundance of fascinating memorabilia and nostalgic snapshots. Woven throughout is correspondence between Ruth and her mentor Edward Weston, as well as interviews with friends, colleagues, students, and her long-time printer. Also included is a special section entitled "Workshop," which surveys Ruth's acclaimed teaching methods. Coinciding with an exhibition in honor of Ruth's 95th birthday, Ruth Bernhard: Between Life and Art is a beautiful celebration of an extraordinary woman.

Michelle 7 Galleries -- Ruth Bernhard

Excerpt:

Ruth Bernhard is one of the great artistic talents of the twentieth century. Her work, which she calls "gifts from the unconscious" is one of the most beautiful bodies of art ever created. And her nudes are startling in their magnificence. She was born in Berlin, Germany in 1905. She did not begin her study of photography until she had moved to New York City in 1927. It was there that she began using an 8x10 view camera but it wasn't until a chance meeting with Edward Weston on a Santa Monica beach in 1935 that her life's work would start to be realized. This simple encounter with Weston transformed Ruth, or at least how she looked at photography. Weston opened her eyes to the art form that photography could be and the two started what would become a lifelong correspondence.

Peter Fetterman Gallery -- Ruth Bernhard

The Peter Fetterman Gallery represents the best of 19th and 20th century photography, located at Bergamot Station in Santa Monica, California.  This gallery represents some fine examples of Berhard's work.
