The
Queer Press Guide 2000 by Paul Harris (Editor)
This book will be of use to Journalists,
Writers, Editors, Publishers, Photographers, Activists, people in
Public Relations, Advertising Agencies, Lobbyists, Advertisers and
anyone else who wants to know how to reach the g/l/b/t population.
The book contains listings of the Queer Press
from every continent apart from Antarctica; the most comprehensive
listing of the Queer Press in the United States and Canada ever to
appear in print; the names of the key personnel at each
publication; details of phone and fax numbers, and e-mail and
website addresses; circulation figures (together with whether they
are audited or not); minimum pay scales to writers and
photographers; hands-on advice from Publishers and Editors about
what they are looking for; and advice on how to Self-Syndicate
your work.
"As someone who has written for over fifty
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender publications worldwide it
quickly became apparent to me that there wasn't a book on the
market that gave me the information that I needed. This book seeks
to bridge that gap. I have hunted high and low to bring you
details of as many publications as I can from literally all over
the world. The book will tell you about the key personnel at each
publication; how to contact them; what their circulation is; how
regularly they publish; what their minimum compensation rates are;
as well as information on precisely what they are looking for from
freelancers and how they would like the material to be submitted
to them.
Based on the enormous interest the book has
already received it is likely to become an annual publication.
There are about 400 publications listed together with information
on how to go about self-syndicating your work as well as
information about various organizations that seek to help the gay,
lesbian, bisexual and transgender writer such as the National
Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association, The Publishing Triangle,
and Q*ink. Barbara Dozetos, Editor of "Out In The
Mountains" (Vermont's gay paper) also contributes an essay
called 'Why The Gay Press Matters.'" -- Paul Harris, Editior

Jonathan Capehart
"Who is the typical black, gay
man?" Jonathan Capehart, editorial writer for the Daily
News asks. "Is there such a thing?" Capehart will
talk about the boxes gay people and African Americans are placed
in by others and will address the preconceived notions about how
gay people of color are supposed to behave and think. Capehart has
contributed to OUT Magazine and The Advocate, and is a regular
guest on New York 1 News’ program ‘Inside City Hall.’ Most
recently, he was one of the members of the editorial board at the
Daily News to receive the Pulitzer Prize for editorial writing.
Capehart is no stranger to
controversy. He has sparked controversies with his articles on gay
sex clubs, the Morning Party and gay support for Republican Mayors
in New York and Los Angeles. He is also a correspondent for the
critically acclaimed public television show ‘In the Life,’ and
a former officer of the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists
Association.

The Advocate, Oct 24, 2000
Excerpt:
Kevin Ivers robbed me at the National Lesbian
and Gay Journalists Association convention in San Francisco in
September. The spokesman for the Log Cabin Republicans--the gay
Republicans--mugged me of the only possible contribution I could
have made to a lively panel discussion on the gay vote.
Get a load of what he said. "To be a
successful movement, we have to be a bipartisan movement,"
Ivers told the packed room at the Argent Hotel. "It is clear
that in Los Angeles, gay and lesbian groups have influence in the
Democratic Party. Log Cabin is trying to do the same."
He went on to say, "When the election is
over, the election is over. And you will have to deal with the
next government. You will need to have entree. You have to make
sure all your bases are covered. Log Cabin sees its role to mark
progress and plant the flag for gay and lesbian issues within the
Republican Party."
That's basically what I have been saying to
anyone who will listen. And I'm a Democrat...

Portland, Ore. - There is an ugly referendum on
the Oregon ballot Nov. 7.
Excerpt:
Called the "Student Protection Act,"
Measure 9 would prohibit discussion of homosexuality in AIDS
education programs, diversity seminars and any other program in
Oregon public schools that would treat homosexuality as normal.
The measure's author and promoter is Lon Mabon,
the 53-year- old chairman of Oregon Citizens Alliance and former
national field director for Alan Keyes' first run for the
Republican presidential nomination in 1996.
Lest you think Measure 9 is too crazy to pass, a
poll of 611 likely voters by KATU-TV and the Oregonian newspaper
in Portland released Sept. 17 showed that the ballot issue is
supported by 47 percent and opposed by 48 percent of the
electorate...

Commentary by Jonathan Capehart, October, 2000
From the Transgender Advocacy Coalition
Excerpt:
Seattle, Oct. 19 -- Michael Kammerer was
different from the other men in Fire Station 62 in the Mar Vista
section of Los Angeles. He was the station commander. A liberal
Democrat "in an environment of 90 percent
conservative-Republican G.I. Joe types," Kammerer recalled.
And he felt that he should have been born a woman.
So, on June 28, 1991, his 22nd anniversary with
the Los Angeles Fire Department, Michael Kammerer, the Navy
veteran and 47- year-old father of two grown children, went to
work as Michele, and began his new identity as a woman.
"There was shock, disbelief,
confusion" at the station, she told me last week. But for the
most part, Kammerer said, her colleagues have been supportive. She
credits the "positive, proactive attitude" of her
bosses, and the training they provided the firemen at Station 62
and those in the surrounding area...
