Nothing but the Girl : The Blatant Lesbian Image : A Portfolio and Exploration of Lesbian Erotic PhotographyNothing but the Girl : The Blatant Lesbian Image : A Portfolio and Exploration of Lesbian Erotic Photography by Susie Bright (Editor), Jill Posener (Editor)

This beautifully produced book contains the landmark work of the most influential lesbian photographers in the world, including Morgan Gwenwald, Della Grace, Diana Blok, Tee Corrine, Jill Posener and Honey Lee Cottrell. Each portfolio is accompanied by an in-depth biography of the artist in which they discuss some of the themes that have fueled their own work from sex, SM, gender and race to fashion, the body and nature. Beyond the impact of the individual photographers, Bright writes about the themes that have fueled lesbian photography: the reproach and confrontation to conventional feminist; the feminist approach to the body; lesbian relationship to popular culture; lesbian relationship to nature; generational differences; the division in the gay rights movement versus queer lib counter-culture; and the dynamics of power and gender bending in lesbian imagery, from androgyny to butch-femme romanticism to gender anarchy. Bright also places the influence of lesbian photography, and women artists, within the context of the art world as a whole. She argues that the work these women have produced is not only exquisite, but revolutionary in content and presentation. All the more remarkable that it has developed despite the overt prejudice and punitive reaction in society against female sexual independence. The lesbian image: sexy, maverick, rebellious, butch yet glamorous, strong and simultaneously vulnerable that has been pioneered and developed by an extra-ordinary group of lesbian photographers, is fully documented her in over 150 black and white and color photographs.

Susie Bright is widely-known as a pioneer in the study of sexual thought and practice, on which subjects she has written and lectured worldwide.

Jill Posener is a leading lesbian photographer whose work has appeared in magazines, books and newspapers. They both live and work in San Francisco, California.

"Susie Bright and Jill Posener, who worked together as editor and photo editor of On Our Backs, gathered the most dramatic, controversial and sometimes the most confrontational images they could find, then constructed much of the text out of interviews with the thirty-three featured artists. These are woven around historical narratives by Bright and a framing essay by Posener. The pictures fairly leap off the page at you, appalling some and delighting others.

I must add here that I sat with one lesbian friend who punctuated the turning of the pages in Nothing But the Girl with the words "Disgusting. Disgusting." Another said of many of the images, "Well, these aren't what made me want to become a lesbian." A third kept saying "Wow" with a long, drawn out, reverential hush in her voice. Few people are neutral about this book. No one calls it boring..." -- Tee Corinne
