All
Over Me (1997, 90 min, US)
While gay and lesbian coming-of-age films seem
to be a dime a dozen, this tender drama of a gawky teenager's
realization of her lesbianism is far from ordinary. For this
independently made film from the Sichel sisters (Alex and Sylvia)
wonderfully captures the growing pains of adolescence and the joy,
tentativeness and excitement of the protagonist's emerging lesbian
identity. Set in New York's Hell's Kitchen area, the story focuses
on Claude (Alison Follard) and her best friend Ellen (Tara Subkoff)
during the hot summer. Claude feels completely alone, suffering
not only from the typical neurocies of adolescence but from her
unrequited love for Ellen, who is enthusiastically straight. Moody
and uncommunicative, with only the music of Patti Smith to sooth
her soul, Claude eventually finds solace with a wannabe riot grrrl
and fellow baby dyke Lucy. A story about change, separation and
self-discovery that is both knowing and amazingly sensitive. Gay
teen actor Wilson Cruz co-stars.
Director: Alex Sichel
Starring: Alison Follard, Tara Subkoff,
Wilson Cruz, Cole Hauser, Leisha Haley

ACTOR
Filmography:

|
Excerpt:
In what was a first for a series
regular, Wilson Cruz portrayed a teenager searching for his true
sexual identity and for life's - and love's - deeper meaning in My
So-Called Life. Wilson brought sensitivity and intelligence to the
role, and said of his experience on the series: "I am so
proud to have played Rickie Vasquez. To me he is a beacon of light
in a world darkened by ignorance and intolerance." Born in
New York City, Wilson moved with his family to San Bernadino,
California, where he currently lives. His acting experience
includes both television and theatre. Prior to his role on My
So-Called Life, Wilson was a series regular in the television show
Great Scott. Wilson's theatrical experience includes performing
with Young Americans and roles in Cradle of Fire, Supporting Cast,
Becoming Memories, Roar of the Greasepaint..., and Wedding Band...

From Latina
Online, November 1999
Excerpt:
Latina caught up with the soon to be 26-year-old
actor at Los Angeles' Café Espresso Mi Cultura, where he chatted
about roles, Puerto Rican food, and heaven.
L: Some groups have called for Latinos to stop watching TV.
C: You know, I can't sit here and say that I completely disagree.
At the same time, I want people to see me and the work I'm trying
to do on Party of Five.
L: You don't do the Hollywood premieres?
C: If I have a friend in the movie. I went to the premiere of Mod
Squad because Clare [Danes] was in it. I'll go to support the
people I know and love.
L: What's your idea of a romantic date?
C: I think the nicest romantic thing is having a nice little
dinner at home with my boyfriend, watching TV, and just cuddling
in the couch...

IO Magazine
Excerpt:
When Cruz portrayed Rickie last year on the
acclaimed television show "My So-Called Life," truth
doubled as fiction as he brought his own painful and sometimes
repressed memories of growing up gay to the screen...

By Jeff Walsh, Oasis Editor
When Oasis last talked to Wilson Cruz two years
ago, he mentioned that My So-Called Life wouldn't be the last we'd
see of him.
And, in passing, he mentioned how much he would
like to perform in a Broadway play, among his list of other career
goals.
Well, audiences are about to see a whole new
side of Cruz as the HIV-positive drag queen Angel in the La Jolla,
Calif. cast of Rent (which will tour, starting in Los Angeles). He
dropped the weight My So-Called Life made him gain to look younger
for the show, shaved the goatee you may have seen and, in his own
words, is "pretty damned beautiful" in women's clothes.
(The cast hasn't taken publicity photos yet, so we can't show you
the results)...
