Figure Skating School : A Professionally Structured Course from Basic Steps to Advanced TechniquesFigure Skating School : A Professionally Structured Course from Basic Steps to Advanced Techniques by Peter Morrissey, James Young

The budding Elvis Stojko or Josee Choinard [or John Curry] in your family will love this guide with diagrams and instruction on jumps, steps and other recommendations.

"Figure Skating School" is for people of all ages and abilities. Whatever your level of fitness and sporting ability, you can make great progress with this practical guide. A systematic course of instruction, it guides you from basic steps--skating forwards and backwards--through the most advanced techniques such as double flip and triple Salchow.

Written by two professional instructors, the clear text is complemented by over 30 full-color figure illustrations. Diagrams showing correct positioning of the feet accompany each illustration, making sure you don't put the wrong foot forward.

Also includes:

History of Figure Skating
Guidance on clothing and equipment
General principles of good skating
Sections on pairs skating and ice dance

Stunning photographs of today's skating stars complete a figure skating treat for anyone interested in the sport.

James Young is Chairman of the British Ice Teacher's Association, and Peter Morrissey is also a member. Young has coached figure skaters for more than 30 years, and has produced junior and adult champions in that time.

John Curry

From Rainbow Ice

Excerpt:

Curry is widely considered the purest male skater in living memory. His ice theatre work, both solo and ensemble, is still revered today, and his influence is felt through the work of such protégés as Moira North, Lori Nichol and Katherine Healy. As a pro, he combined the disciplines of dance and skating, sometimes taking his skates off entirely and choreographing ballet or modern dance pieces for his shows. Skaters such as Paul Wylie, in his Schindler's List exhibition, and Ice Theater of New York member Alizah Allen, in her "Don Quixote" competitive program, continue to pay tribute to Curry...

John Curry Figure Skater

From BBC Online

Excerpt:

In 1976, at the age of 26, he won the European Championship and followed with a gold medal performance at the Olympics. Then against the advice of his coach he entered the 1976 World Championships and won.

Awarded the OBE he then turned professional, forming his own skating company that used his theory of skating as a dance form, borrowing the grace and body lines from ballet. He gathered like-minded skaters and hired major ballet choreographers. "The John Curry Theatre of Skating" was an immediate success with critics and audiences. Curry, who was elected to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1991 was diagnosed with Aids that year and died three years later at the age of 44...
