Out of the Past: The Struggle for Gay and Lesbian. Rights In America (1998) Out of the Past: The Struggle for Gay and Lesbian. Rights In America (1998)

vhs

Inspiring, ambitious and educational, Out of the Past explores gay/lesbian activism and history on two fronts: the present-day struggles of a lesbian teenager thrust into the national limelight by entrenched homophobia, and the reenactment of pivotal moments in the 300-year struggle for gay/lesbian acceptance. Kelli Peterson was a Salt Lake City teen whose after-school club, the Gay-Straight Alliance, was banned by authorities and made illegal by the state legislature. Through interviews with the determined Kelli, her family and supporters, the film recounts her and fellow students fighting and -- through a court challenge -- overturning the ban. Interspersed with Kelli's story are scenes featuring several important but historically forgotten characters in American Queer history. Highlighted are the pioneering efforts of Henry Gerber, Bayard Rustin, Barbara Gittings and other activists, whose gay rights work begun in the 1950s laid the groundwork for the modern-day gay rights movement. Directed by Jeff Dupre.

City seeks to give Gerber home landmark status One-time Chicagoan began first gay-rights group in U.S.

by Karen Hawkins, Windy City Times, The Voice of Chicago's Gay and Lesbian Community, Dec 27, 2000

 Excerpt:

When pioneering activist Henry Gerber attempted to bring liberation to Chicago's gay residents in the early 1920s, it earned him an arrest, jail time, three costly trials and the loss of his job. Now, nearly 80 years later, the city wants to honor Gerber in a way that even famous residents such as Carl Sandburg and Walt Disney haven't been recognized: The Commission on Landmarks has recommended that his former home be given landmark protection status...
