Timbre
Sophie B. Hawkins
Sophie's third album
and follow up of her two Gold albums (Whaler and Tongues 'N Tails)
is "Timbre".
The album is written, produced and performed by
Sophie B Hawkins with Kevin Killen engineering.
The goal of this whole album was to make it
resonate with something "really, really true that came from
my body," says Sophie, explaining her choice of Timbre for
the title. "There was no compromise. To me it was like
playing the cello. When it's tuned so that it's ringing - singing
against your sternum - you go for a tone that evokes the truth of
your whole self. That's the timbre I'm talking about."
"Sophie B. Hawkins
might have been better named Sensual B. Hawkins.
-- MTV OnLine
"...Sophie B. is more than just an
outspoken bisexual genius cult hero--she's versatile as all get
out!" -- Spin
"The album
showcases a singer who has honed and gathered her various vocal
styles...into a sleek, multi-faceted whole." -- Rolling
Stone
Sophie
B Hawkins's Secrets Revealed in the revealing documentary The
Cream Will Rise as we interview her and the director Gigi
Gaston.
"I've never been ashamed of living with a
woman. I've never hidden it. I've never been ashamed of being with
a man, except I've only had one serious relationship with a man,
and that's not in the present. I don't have a traditional
viewpoint. And there's no way that I could get up and say I'm a
lesbian. I've never felt like a lesbian. I've never lived like a
lesbian. But I have no problem getting up and saying I live with a
woman, I'm passionately, madly in love. Committed." -- Singer
Sophie B. Hawkins to Girlfriends magazine, October, 2000
issue.

"In Her Own Words" (excerpt):
My childhood was Huckleberry Finn in Manhattan.
My Mississippi was Central Park. My raft was my skateboard. And my
Jim was the songs in my soul that I was someday going to write.
The Tom Sawyers came and went, eventually, to Princeton, Harvard
or Yale.
At 14, I met an African drummer who taught me
all sorts of African and Brazilian instruments, songs and dances.
He took me to Black Orpheus and the National Dance Ballet of
Senegal. He took me uptown to Mickels to hear Art Blakey and Max
Roach, and downtown to Tramps at four in the morning to hear Big
Joe Turner sing the way-blue blues...

Excerpt:
Sophie B. Hawkins has been described by Lauren
Hutton as intelligent, individualistic, and entertaining. All are
correct. Sophie B. Hawkins' first release, Tongues and Tails,
was a huge success, even before it had been released. Record
labels fought over who would sign the new singer. Colombia Records
won promising her a freedom. Freedom is portrayed in much, if not
all of her music. Tongues and Tails was a success.
The first single, "Damn, I wish I was Your Lover," with
it's brilliant guitar-work, and it's raw seductiveness, was
praised by critics...
