This first published resource on the life and
theatrical career of award-winning actress Eva Le Gallienne traces
her acting debut in 1914, her travels to the United States, and
the successes and failures of her New York City repertory
theatres. Also noted are Le Gallienne's critically acclaimed
performances in such plays as Liliom, The Swan, The Master
Builder, Hedda Gabler, The Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard, The
Seagull, Camille, Romeo and Juliet, Alice in Wonderland, Mary
Stuart, and The Royal Family. The book covers not only her
Broadway engagements, but also her many lecture and theatre tours,

Schanke received the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
Outstanding Alumni Award in 1996. Post-doctoral work in film
studies was completed at Northwestern University. He has taught at
Central for twenty years and at one point was director of
Central's program in London. In 1993 he received the Outstanding
Performance Award for his publishing efforts. Professor Schanke
has written three books. The most recent, Shattered Applause,
which is a biography of the stage actress Eva
Le Gallienne, received several awards and was featured on CNN
and on a Studs Terkel radio interview. He has a contract with the
University of Michigan for three more books focusing on the
history of American Theatre. The first one is called "Passing
Performances" and examines the role of sexual orientation in
the private and public lives of leading players in the American
Theatre, going back to 1820. He serves as Editor
of the international theatre journal, Theatre History Studies.

Le Gallienne, Eva (1899-1991), British-born American actor, producer,
and director, noted for her physical beauty, her splendid voice,
and her managerial abilities. She was born in London, the daughter
of Richard Le Gallienne, a celebrated British critic and poet, and
she made her acting debut at the Prince of Wales Theatre, London,
in 1914. The following year she made her American debut, and
during the next decade she appeared in New York City and on tour

Le Gallienne was born in London in 1899 and
raised in France. She made her speaking debut onstage in 1915 and
moved to New York the following year. Eva quickly established
herself as a leading lady in the theater with such roles as Elsie
Dover in Not So Long Ago, her first big Broadway hit
(1920.) In the early Twenties Eva was visiting Alla Nazimova at
her mansion and dining with such guests as Rudolph Valentino and
designer Natacha Rambova. She went on to play Julie in Joseph
Schildkraut's production of Liliom which made her an
instant star. She went on to star in The Swan with Basil
Rathbone in 1923, Ibsen's The Master Builder in 1925 and The
Cradle Song in 1927. In 1926 she opened the Civic Repertory
Theater where she produced, directed and starred in a number of
plays including Hedda Gabler, Chekhov's The Cherry
Orchard (in which Nazimova starred,) Peter Pan, The
Seagull, Romeo and Juliet, and Camille. In 1936
the Civic Repertory closed and Eva joined the Theater Guild and
later the National Repertory Theater. In her later years she
played such roles as Queen Elizabeth in Mary Stuart and the
White Queen in Alice in Wonderland...
