Breaking
the Surface by
Greg Louganis, Eric Marcus
Breaking the Surface tells the unflinchingly
honest story of Olympic diving champion Greg Louganis, whose
athletic success also involved the challenge of breaking free of a
lifetime of silence and isolation. In this frank, powerful memoir,
Louganis reveals the whole story of his life--from a childhood
marked by loneliness and self-esteem problems to his present-day
battle with AIDS.
Greg Louganis won
back-to-back double gold medals at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics, and
his amazing physique and handsome face should have made him a
media superstar. Yet Louganis's struggles with self-doubt lack of
confidence held him back personally and professionally. He only
achieved real happiness after coming out as an HIV-positive gay
man. This is a thoughtful, sensitive portrait of a man whose
insecurities nearly destroyed him, but who found the love and
inner strength to save himself.

Greg Louganis began competing in diving at age
10. By 16, he had won his first Olympic medal, a silver medal on
the platform in 1976. At 24, he became the first man in 56 years
to win two gold medals in diving by winning both the platform and
springboard events. In 1988, competing against divers half his
age, he became the first to win double gold medals for diving in
two consecutive Olympics...

Excerpt:
By 1986, Greg Louganis had won two Olympic gold
medals. He was the best diver in the world. He had many fans. But
he was the fan of a 13-year-old boy.
That boy was Ryan White. Ryan had a blood
problem called hemophilia. To survive, Ryan had to get blood from
other people. In the 1980s many people with hemophilia got AIDS
from the blood. Ryan was one of these people.
This was not Ryan's only problem. Here is how
Greg explains it:
I was very impressed by this kid who had gone to
court to go to school, especially because I had always hated
school and would have been happy if someone had said I couldn't
go. Ryan was sick, but instead of people having compassion for
him, they were terrified that he'd spread AIDS by going to
school. I thought if I showed I wasn't afraid of Ryan, then
maybe others would follow my example.
Greg invited Ryan to come to a diving competition
near Ryan's house. Afterwards, Greg gave Ryan his gold medal.
Greg, Ryan, and Ryan's mother became friends. Together they worked
to help people understand AIDS...

Why should I spend my time creating and
maintaining a tribute page to Greg? Well I guess it all started
when I opened his book Breaking the Surface. Once I began
reading it, I finished it within 24 hours. It is very hard to
explain, but it was like I was reading about my own life, about my
own pain...
