Blacklist

This is an annotated list of notable LGBT people of African descent. This list of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered people of African Descent was first developed in response to requests for names of lesbigay and trans people to include in Black History Month 1994 celebrations. It is called the "Blacklist" for two reasons both of which are obvious. First, the people listed are of African descent, black. Second, unfortunately some members of the black community have sought to disavow the contributions, identities, or worth of many of the people listed here.

Black Triangle

There were in excess of 11 million people who were exterminated by the Nazi Party prior to, and during WWII. The Jews made up 6 million of that number. Another 5 million was comprised of other groups of people deemed unacceptable by Nazi Germany. Among those were the Gypsies, the mentally ill, gay men and lesbians.

Each group was identified by a symbol sewn onto their clothing. The yellow Star of David was used for Jews, a pink triangle for gay men, and the lesbian was identified by a black triangle. When gay men and lesbians began to come out and be counted, the pink triangle became the symbol by which they recognized one another. By the time the black triangle came to the awareness of women, rainbow colors began to sprout up as the universal symbol for all gay men, lesbians and transgendered people.

They patiently sat through hours of interviews, talking about what it has been like to grow up and grow old(er) in one of the most beautiful places in the world. These are special stories, because they detail a facet of history that has gone largely unnoticed -- being gay...
