Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender
Public Policy Issues : A Citizen's and Administrator's Guide to
the New Cultural Struggle by Wallace Swan
(Editor)
In response to the cultural war declared upon
gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered people by the radical
right, this book gives you an inside look at the gay community's
perspectives on the four major issues of school curricula,
workplace protections, legitimization of same-sex relationships,
and protections against discrimination. As
Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgender Public Policy Issues examines the
role of radical religious thought in American politics, it looks
at the development of conflicts on the national level over the
four main issues. It also looks at specific examples of the
conflicts, such as the "Rainbow Curriculum" battle in
New York City and the controversial school board elections in Des
Moines. You may think you are sensitive to the issues, but are you
helping to find solutions? Get this book and find out!
"A timely primer on the major public policy issues facing
communities on the eve of the 21st century. Provides a uniquely
homespun, Midwestern perspective on internationally important
issues, including the workplace movement, youth and educational
matters, marriage and domestic partnerships, and social justice
concerns. By combining research with practical field experience
and personal perspectives, this book will appeal to almost anyone
interested in advocacy within social systems." -- Gary
Remafedi, MD, MPH, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, University
of Minnesota
"Provides analysis and guidance for public administrators and
citizens to develop programs and policies to overcome hurtful
stereotypes and promote acceptance of G/L/B/T people in all areas
of contemporary life. Also gives insights on the experiences of
nonheterosexual people in our society and identifies policy issues
that should be supported by all citizens who value the principles
of American democracy." -- Mary M. Timney, PhD, Director,
Master of Public Administration Program, University of Cincinnati

Daniel Stewart took many detours on his way to
becoming a gay Republican mayor
If you were a student at Cumberland High School
in Cumberland, R.I., in 1980, you would definitely remember your
prom. That was the year Aaron Fricke successfully sued the school
for the right to take another boy to the event. Less memorable,
perhaps, would have been the hordes of hecklers--which included
Daniel Stewart, today the first openly gay mayor of the small town
of Plattsburgh, N.Y. "I was against them," the mayor
chuckles sheepishly, "being the big closeted person I
was."
Though Stewart has yet to make amends for his
high school wrong (he has tried unsuccessfully to find Fricke to
apologize), the two ensuing decades have brought him to a place he
never could have imagined that senior spring. Today, Stewart is a
rising GOP star, one of a handful of gay Republicans to meet last
April with Republican presidential hopeful George W. Bush, whom
Stewart has endorsed. And he is the first openly gay mayor in New
York State. Clearly Stewart has not taken the usual path to
office...

Daniel L. Stewart, a member of Log Cabin and the
first openly gay mayor in New York State history, was inaugurated
on January 2, 2000 at a ceremony in historic Plattsburgh City
Hall...

Log Cabin Republicans is the nation's largest gay
and lesbian Republican organization, with over 50 chapters across
the country, a federal Political Action Committee, and an active
national office headquartered in Washington, D.C.
