Tom
of Finland : His Life and Times (Stonewall Inn Editions) by
F. Valentine Hooven
Perhaps no one has had a greater influence on
gay male fashion than illustrator-cartoonist Tom of Finland. In
this volume his unusual and triumphant life story is told in words
and pictures. The pictures, of course, steal the show, as Tom's
bubble-bottomed macho men fight, love, and punish each other.
There's still much to be said about Tom's impact on American and
European gay culture, but this book provides a good starting point
not only for Tom's fans who want to learn about the man behind the
leather-clad images, but also for the uninitiated who've always
wondered where the leather-cap-and-chaps look originated. Sadly,
with Tom's death the flow of testosterone-packed pictures has
stopped, but volumes like this show that there is still life in
his legend.

Excerpt:
Tom of Finland was born Touko Laaksonen in 1920
in the village of Kaarina, Finland. At the age of nineteen, he
moved to Helsinki to attend art college and, for his own personal
enjoyment, created his first homoerotic drawings.
Following his release from the army after World War II, Touko
began to work in advertising. He continued to draw his fantasies
and, urged by close friends, submitted them to the American
bodybuilding magazine Physique Pictorial.
Because of the conservative social climate in 1957, he chose to be
published under the pseudonym "Tom of Finland."
His images were an immediate success, followed by the publication
of numerous booklets and anthologies, and since 1973, his work has
been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide...
