Lesbians, gay men,
bisexuals and transgender (lgbt) people face a daunting array of social
and legal issues, yet their concerns are largely ignored in the funding
patterns of nearly all major foundations and corporate giving programs.
Currently, less than 0.3% of annual philanthropic dollars are being
awarded to non-HIV/AIDS related program and projects affecting the
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities.
The Working Group on Funding Lesbian and
Gay Issues (Working Group) was formed in 1982 in response to this lack of
visibility and funding in the philanthropic community. We are the only
national organization advocating for increased support of lgbt issues
within organized philanthropy.
The Working Group is comprised
of individual donors and grantmakers from private, public, family,
corporate and community foundations. As an Affinity Group of both the Council
on Foundations and the National
Network of Grantmakers, the Working Group is an increasingly valuable
bridge between grantmakers and lesbian and gay organizations. The Astraea
National Lesbian Action Foundation serves as the fiscal sponsor of the
Working Group.
