Heterophobia
: Sexual Harassment and the Future of Feminism by
Daphne Patai
A scathing criticism of political and sexual
"correctness," this thought-provoking and powerfully
argued book is sure to incite debate among all concerned with the
legacy and future of woman's rights.
Once confident in the potential of feminism to
create a more equitable and just society, Daphne Patai
persuasively demonstrates in Heterophobia how the efforts of some
feminists - members of what she calls the "sexual harassment
industry" - have created an environment that stifles healthy
and natural interactions between the sexes. The tremendous growth
of sexual harassment legislation represents feminism's greatest
contemporary success, but this victory has dubious consequences -
a world where kindergarten boys face legal action for kissing
female classmates and men are sued by coworkers for offenses such
as unwanted hugs, uninvited compliments, or glances that last too
long.

Sexual harassment is unwelcome conduct based on
sex or of a sexual nature that can make you feel uncomfortable,
helpless or afraid. It is a form of sex discrimination that is
illegal under federal law and state law in California and many
other states. You have a right to be free from sexual harassment
and there are ways in which you can make it stop.

RAINN is a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week national
hotline for victims of sexual assault. The toll-free hotline is:
1-800-656-HOPE
RAINN is being provided as a service for victims
who cannot reach a rape crisis center through a local telephone
call, as well as for those who might not know that a local center
exists.
RAINN is a non-profit organization located in
Washington, D.C. RAINN was founded thanks to generous grants from
Atlantic Records and Warner Music Group.
When a victim calls the 800 number, a computer
will read the caller's area code and the first three digits of the
phone number. Then, the call will be routed instantaneously to the
rape crisis center nearest the caller. If the line is busy, the
call will be routed to the next closest center. Whichever center
answers the call handles it as if it had come in directly,
providing counseling and support.
