Erotics
& Politics : Gay Male Sexuality, Masculinity and Feminism
(Critical
Studies on Men and Masculinities) by Tim
Edwards
Erotics and Politics examines the
intersection of the study of sexuality (particularly gay males
studies) and gender (specifically those concerned with feminist
studies). In doing so, it covers a wide range of subjects
important to gay and feminist movements of the past 25 years.
These issues include gay liberational sexuality, sado-masochism,
pornography, promiscuity, personal relationships, AIDS and
postmodernity. The central focus of attention throughout is the nature
and development of gay male sexuality and masculinity. This book
is unique in its coverage of a wide range of topics and its
analytical connection of these topics which are usually examined
in isolation. Drawing upon both academic material as well as
personal accounts, Erotics and Politics discusses such issues as
how feminism and gay male sexuality enjoy a simultaneously
collaborative and antagonistic relationship; how society has
conflated issues of gay liberation, child abuse and sadomasochism.
Tim
Edwards is Lecturer in Sociology at Oxford Brookes University.

The idea of k.i.s.s. of the panopticon is to
give people a quick, user-friendly, one-stop shopping guide to new
media literacy, as well as cultural/critical theory and its
relationship with communications and new media, including the
Internet. It might also help to get people thinking and maybe,
just maybe, provide a fresh perspective on how this stuff really
affects our lives.

The Critical Theory Institute provides a locus
for the conduct and support of collaborative, interdisciplinary
research focused on the theoretical underpinnings of such fields
as history, literature, philosophy, art and politics. The
Institute's principal function is to provide a forum for debate
among competing movements in contemporary critical theory so that
existing theoretical models can be challenged and refined. The
Institute's research consists not only of the application of
theory to date but also of self-reflexive investigation of
theoretical presuppositions in order to produce alternative
theoretical constructs and strategies. The Institute organizes
colloquia, lectures, seminars, and workshops in which leading
theorists from the United States and abroad participate in its
research projects. It also sponsors the annual Wellek
Library Lectures in which a leading theorist gives a series of
lectures on a topic of importance in critical theory.
